Say Goodbye to Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are bothersome insects that at the very least can leave you covered in irritating yet harmless bites and at the worst can spread dangerous diseases. Depending on where you live, dealing with the occasional mosquito is inevitable, but there are some safe mosquito control methods that can at least minimize this particular pest problem.

Eliminate Breeding Sites

First of all, you will need to eliminate some common mosquito breeding grounds. Mosquitoes breed in fresh water sources such as swamps and ponds, but they will also breed in sources of stagnant water that might be very near your home such as bird feeders, swimming pools, and puddles on your property. If you can, eliminate these sources to keep the mosquito population near your home at a minimum. If you have a swimming pool, keep up on your maintenance and make sure that it is well-chlorinated.

Mow Your Lawn

Mosquitoes may breed in wet areas, but they are more likely to rest in long grass. Keeping your lawn mowed can be a good way to keep the population down and force some of the more stubborn pests to move away from your home.

Invest in Mosquito Nets

If the mosquito population near you is particularly bad, you can still enjoy some time outside if you create mosquito-free zones with mosquito netting and screens. In fact, simply installing screen doors and windows will help keep the pests out of your home if you want to open a window on a nice day.

Find A Good Repellent

Any mosquito repellent that contains DEET will be effective at keeping mosquitoes at bay, but DEET isn’t always safe to use around very young children. If you want something that is effective and safe to use on your children, consider something containing picaridin instead. You can also help keep mosquitoes at bay with candles containing citronella oil. It may not be as effective as screens or mosquito nets, but it does provide some safe protection.

Contact An Extermination Company

If the mosquito problem in your home is too severe, you can always call a professional pest control company to take care of the problem. These professionals will know exactly where mosquitoes breed and live, and they will be able to both rid your home of these pests and provide advice on how to keep them under control. There are pest control companies throughout the United States who specialize in mosquito control, so contact one near you if you want to be free of these pesky biting insects this summer.
